Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed (commonly known simply as The Need for Speed or, in Japan, Over Drivin') is a groundbreaking 1994 racing simulation video game developed by Pioneer Productions (EA Canada) and published by Electronic Arts. It marks the first-ever installment in the Need for Speed series, renowned for its realism and cinematic flair.

Realistic Gameplay & Features
-Developed in collaboration with Road & Track magazine, delivering accurate real‑world vehicle dynamics, engine sounds, gearbox behavior, and automotive stats.
-The game includes full‑motion videos, narrated showcases, photos, and audio commentary for each vehicle.
-Players must manually shift gears—even with automatic transmission enabled—for added realism.

Cars & Tracks
-Eight licensed supercars at launch: e.g. Chevrolet Corvette ZR‑1, Dodge Viper RT/10, Ferrari 512TR, Lamborghini Diablo VT, each presented in showcase mode with real‑life specs.
-Later versions introduced a ninth, fictional unlockable vehicle, the high‑performance Warrior PTO E/2.
-Original 3DO version offered three open-road point-to-point courses: City, Coastal, Alpine, each divided into three scenic segments.
-Ports and the Special Edition expanded to include closed‑circuit tracks: Rusty Springs Raceway, Autumn Valley Speedway, Vertigo Ridge, plus bonus tracks Burnt Sienna and Transtropolis.
-Unlockable bonus track: Lost Vegas, accessible by winning all tracks in Tournament mode.

Modes & Replayability
-Race Modes: Head‑to‑Head, Time Trial, Single Race (up to eight opponents), and Tournament mode with progression and unlockables.
-Police Pursuits: Open-road courses include traffic and police chases; three tickets (or two on Saturn) leads to arrest/game over.
-Highlight Reel: Save and replay races with adjustable camera angles and playback speed.
-Multiplayer: Split‑screen on PlayStation and Saturn, and modem-based head‑to‑head on DOS/Windows.
