The species most commonly associated with “skunks” is Mephitis mephitis, while the South American jaritataca belongs to the genus Conepatus (e.g., Conepatus chinga or Conepatus semistriatus). It has black fur with distinctive white stripes. It is famous for its ability to expel a foul-smelling liquid from its anal glands when it feels threatened, as a defense mechanism against predators. They are small carnivorous mammals, usually solitary and nocturnal."
