Thine Own Self Be True! | Perilous World Radio 7/25/25
In a recent episode of "The Chosen" Season 5, which focuses on the betrayal of Jesus by Judas, host David Masters reflects on the emotional triggers that the show evokes. Masters discusses the theme of betrayal, particularly in the context of today's political landscape, where dishonesty seems rampant. He highlights that lies have become so pervasive that they feel almost like a natural state for some individuals, including political figures. Masters introduces the concept of cognitive dissonance from psychology, explaining it as a mental struggle that arises when people hold conflicting beliefs. For instance, people often expect honesty from others, but when faced with betrayal or dishonesty, they must reconcile their expectations with reality—a challenge that can lead to feelings of disorientation. He points to examples from the political arena, recalling Hillary Clinton's comments on experiencing cognitive dissonance regarding Trump's potential reelection. In essence, Masters suggests that many people grapple with dissonance in their lives, stemming from the beliefs they hold and the harsh realities they encounter.
The experience of sudden realization can be profound, often marked by physical reactions like a flushed face or heated ears. This awakening can stem from various triggers, even something as simple as observing a leaf fall, sparking a deeper reflection within us. Each person encounters multiple layers of awakening throughout their lives, but it often begins with a fundamental truth about oneself. My father emphasized that the first truth we confront is the one regarding our own identity. While we may accumulate countless truths about the world around us, it's essential to focus on those that genuinely contribute to our personal growth. As Jesus famously remarked, "know the truth and it will set you free," it becomes clear that this freedom comes from understanding specific truths about our lives rather than generic information. This journey starts with the desire to uncover the truth about ourselves. Shakespeare also echoed this sentiment with his advice to "thine own self be true." To truly be oneself means being willing to acknowledge and confront what we need to see, which can initiate a positive domino effect, guiding us away from outdated ways of living and toward a more authentic existence.
