Discerning Word
Why This Church Will Always Go By the Word of God
Text: Hebrews 4:12-13

Objective: that we may depend on the Word of God for understanding / discernment

specially in the church ministry

Intro:
-Read the whole chapter
-story of job counselor who can't predict the future of jobs.

discern (v) = See or hear differences; identify a particular part or parts of a whole; detect with difficulty
Perceive, recognize, or understand
discernment (n) = The mental ability to understand /discriminate bet. relations
= The trait of judging wisely and objectively

discerning- ( adj )

Having or revealing keen insight and good judgment
Able to make or detect effects of great subtlety; sensitive

- e.g. Saturday worshippers don't understand / discern

the Rest = Dependence in God in salvation and all things else..

This Word of God is Discerning in that:
1. God is all knowing and all powerful: he did the hard part - we can rest assured of that
vv. 10-11
2. It is Alive - "quick" - not dead or useless - v. 12
3. It is Powerful - it can do what is must - able - v. 12
4. It is Sharp - v. 12
common phrase: your brain is sharp - intelligent, wise
"able to cut it" = can do the job

even distinguishes the soul from spirit - both immaterial

5. It understands your thoughts and intents (purposes) - prov. 20:5

all things are manifest in His sight - v. 13

Message/conclusion:

The Word of God- the Lord Jesus understands us.
He discerns even the most secret of secrets.
He should determine what we do with our mind, our time, our family, our resources, our life.
