The warning against innovations (Bid‘ah) and misguidance in religion

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 116th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,The warning against innovations (Bid‘ah) and misguidance in religion

The warning against innovations (Bid‘ah) and misguidance in religion is one of the most serious and repeated themes in Islamic teachings. Islam, as perfected by Allah and conveyed through the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is a complete and final religion. Any addition to it, removal from it, or alteration in its teachings is considered a deviation from the straight path. The Qur'an and authentic Hadith clearly warn believers against introducing innovations, as these lead to misguidance, and misguidance ultimately leads to destruction. This principle is vital in preserving the purity of Islam and safeguarding the Ummah from straying into false beliefs and practices.

In the Qur'an, Allah says in Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:3):

"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion."
This verse, revealed during the Farewell Pilgrimage, is a decisive declaration that Islam is complete. Any attempt to add to it is a challenge to divine wisdom and a form of implicit disbelief in the sufficiency of the religion Allah has perfected.

Similarly, in Surah Al-A‘raf verse 3, Allah warns:

"Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord and do not follow other than Him any allies. Little do you remember."
This verse instructs Muslims to adhere strictly to the Qur'an and the Sunnah, avoiding any teachings, ideas, or practices that are not rooted in revelation. The command is clear: innovation is the path of those who forget or disregard divine guidance.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) explicitly warned against Bid‘ah in his sermons. One of the most famous and oft-repeated hadith is found in Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith No. 4607. It is narrated that the Prophet ? said:

“The best speech is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of affairs are newly-invented matters, and every innovation is misguidance.”
This powerful statement, often recited in khutbahs (sermons), leaves no room for interpretation—any new practice in the religion that was not part of the Prophet’s Sunnah is an error and misguidance.

Another critical hadith is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 867, where the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Whoever introduces into this matter of ours (i.e., Islam) that which is not part of it, it will be rejected.”
This Hadith, known as the Hadith of rejection (Hadith al-Radd), serves as a foundational principle in Islamic jurisprudence. It implies that no matter how well-intentioned an innovation might be, if it was not practiced by the Prophet ? and his companions, it will not be accepted by Allah.

The seriousness of Bid‘ah lies in its deceptive nature. Often, innovations are introduced under the guise of good intentions or increased piety, but they end up altering the essence of Islam. This leads people away from the authentic teachings of the Prophet (PBUH) and opens the door to sectarianism, superstition, and division. The Prophet (PBUH) foresaw this danger and warned the Ummah in advance.

In Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 2676, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“My nation will split into seventy-three sects, all of them in the Fire except one.”* The companions asked, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, *“Those who are upon what I and my companions are upon today.”
This hadith underscores the importance of clinging to the original teachings of the Prophet and his companions. Any deviation, no matter how minor, can lead a group or individual away from the saved path.

The dangers of innovations are also addressed by the early scholars. Imam Malik ibn Anas (rahimahullah) said:

“Whoever innovates in Islam something that he sees as good has claimed that Muhammad betrayed the message, because Allah said, ‘This day I have perfected for you your religion.’”
This statement reflects the consensus of the righteous predecessors (Salaf as-Salih) on the matter of Bid‘ah: that innovation is not a matter of personal opinion but a violation of the divine trust.

In conclusion, both the Qur’an and Sunnah issue severe warnings against religious innovations and misguidance. The path of safety lies in adhering strictly to the revealed teachings and avoiding anything that was not part of the original message of Islam. As the Prophet (PBUH) repeatedly taught, every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance leads to the Fire.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
