Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 114th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran,and in this video we will describe, The story of the People of Madyan (Midian)

The story of the People of Madyan (Midian), the nation to whom Allah sent the Prophet Shu‘ayb (peace be upon him), is a powerful account in the Qur'an that highlights the consequences of economic corruption, dishonesty in trade, and rejection of divine guidance. The people of Madyan were known for cheating in weights and measures, committing fraud, and spreading corruption in the land. Despite the repeated warnings of Shu‘ayb (AS), they continued in their disobedience and arrogance until Allah’s punishment descended upon them in the form of a mighty blast and an overwhelming earthquake that destroyed them completely.

In Surah Al-A‘raf verses 85-86), Allah says:

“And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu‘ayb. He said: O my people! Worship Allah, you have no other god but Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. So give full measure and weight and do not deprive people of their due, and do not cause corruption upon the earth after its reformation. That is better for you if you should be believers. And do not sit on every path threatening and hindering from the way of Allah those who believe in Him, seeking to make it deviant. And remember when you were few and He increased you. And see how was the end of the corrupters.”
These verses summarize the central message of Prophet Shu‘ayb: monotheism, justice in commerce, and social responsibility. He reminded them of Allah’s favors, warned them of corruption, and called for fair dealing and truthfulness.

Despite these clear admonitions, the people mocked Shu‘ayb and challenged his authority. In Surah Hud verses 84-87), Allah narrates:

“And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu‘ayb. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. And do not decrease from the measure and the scale. Indeed, I see you in prosperity; but indeed, I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing Day.’”
But instead of heeding the message, they responded with ridicule:
“They said, ‘O Shu‘ayb, does your prayer command you that we should leave what our fathers worship or not do with our wealth what we please? Indeed, you are the forbearing, the discerning!’” (Surah Hud verse 87)
This response reflects their arrogance and rejection of divine authority, equating their traditions and economic interests above the command of Allah.

As a result of their stubborn disbelief and corruption, Allah’s punishment befell them. In **Surah Ash-Shu‘ara verses 189-190), it is mentioned:

“So they denied him, and the punishment of the day of the overshadowing cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day. Indeed, in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.”
The “overshadowing cloud” is understood as a dense cloud which appeared over them and brought a scorching, destructive wind and fire—a divine punishment tailored for their crimes.

Another description is found in Surah Al-A‘raf verses 91-92):

“So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone. Those who denied Shu‘ayb – it was as though they had never resided there. Those who denied Shu‘ayb – it was they who were the losers.”
The earthquake destroyed them instantly, leaving their city as though they had never lived there—an indication of the total and final nature of the punishment.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also mentioned the people of Shu‘ayb in Hadith. In Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 2333, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“The people of Shu‘ayb were punished by the canopy of the cloud (a?-?ullah).”
This Hadith confirms the Qur’anic account and reaffirms that their punishment was both severe and unique.

Furthermore, in Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 3381, the Prophet (PBUH) referred to the people of Madyan among the nations destroyed due to their crimes, emphasizing that rejecting the message and engaging in economic oppression leads to divine wrath.

The story of the People of Madyan serves as a timeless warning to all societies. It emphasizes the importance of honesty, justice in trade, and obedience to divine guidance. When corruption spreads unchecked, even if a nation appears prosperous, its end can be sudden and complete. Prophet Shu‘ayb’s mission reflects the divine expectation that believers uphold justice not only in worship but also in economic and social conduct. Allah’s punishment upon Madyan is a clear sign for those who reflect, as stated repeatedly throughout the Qur'an “Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.”
