Did Edgar Berlanga's Trainer Set Him Up to Lose?

In a recent interview with Ring Magazine, Hamza Sheeraz confirmed that a member of Edgar Berlanga's team was in the locker room with the NYSAC, watching Sheeraz get his hands wrapped before the fight.

If that's the case, will Edgar Berlanga, his wife, the Terror Squad, and Berlanga's supporters name the "The Puerto Rican Assassin's" team member, who was in the locker room watching Berlanga's hands get wrapped?

For some strange reason, no one, and I mean no one, has brought this up. Why won't Edgar Berlanga and his wife reveal that person's name? Especially if you're certain and have proof that Hamza Sheeraz cheated.

Hamza Sheeraz says, and I quote: "It's a compliment if anything. It goes on to show that I gave Berlanga such a bad beating that they are stooping so low to find an excuse for why Berlanga got beaten so badly."

He adds that Berlanga and his wife can throw as many accusations as they want—end quote. My question for the audience is why Edgar Berlanga won't reveal the trainer who watched Hamza Sheeraz get his hands wrapped before the fight.

If Hamza Sheeraz had loaded gloves, Berlanga's trainer would surely have seen them. Very similar to when Nasim Richards caught Margarito for having loaded hand wraps before the Shane Mosley fight.

Shane Mosley had his lead trainer, Nasim Richards, watch Margarito get his hands wrapped, and he was able to spot the attempted cheating by Margarito's trainer, Javier Capetillo.

Before Margarito vs. Mosley, Mosley's trainer, Naazim Richardson, observed that Margarito had a pasty white substance in his hand wraps. One doctor described this material as plaster hidden in Margarito's wrapped hands, leading to accusations that he may have been trying to cheat.

At Richardson's insistence, California State Inspector Dean Lohuis called for Margarito's hands to be rewrapped. According to Judd Burstein, Mosley's attorney, Margarito had wet pads in the wrapping.

Mosley's doctor, Robert Olvera, likened the material to the plaster used to make casts. Burstein said he seized the pad removed from the wrapping and found another pad in Margarito's dressing room.

Both were placed in a sealed box and given to Lohuis for further study. The California Department of Justice laboratory later confirmed that the substance was similar to plaster of Paris.

In late January, the California State Athletic Commission suspended Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo, pending investigation.

At the hearing, Margarito claimed he did not know what was in the wraps, while Capetillo admitted to making "a big mistake" by placing the wrong inserts into Margarito's hand wraps.

The commission voted unanimously to revoke Margarito and Capetillo's licenses for at least one year. While it found Margarito did not know about the gloves, it took the line that he was responsible for Capetillo's actions as head of the team.

Since state boxing commissions generally honor suspensions imposed in other states, this action effectively banned Margarito from boxing in the United States.

In November 2009, it emerged that the red stains on Margarito's hand wraps used in the Cotto fight were similar to the stains on the inserts seized before the Mosley fight.

This has raised suspicions that Margarito's gloves were loaded for that fight and possibly others. This article was written in 2009 about the Margarito vs Shane Mosley situation.
