The Trump administration has released over 230,000 pages of declassified documents related to the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., marking what U.S. intelligence officials called an “unprecedented” move toward transparency.

The files, sealed since 1977, detail the FBI’s extensive surveillance and disinformation campaign against King under J. Edgar Hoover.

King’s children, who were given advance access, emphasized the personal and historical weight of the records, Al-Jazeera has reported.

While it remains unclear if the release reveals new information about King’s murder, it highlights long-standing concerns about government efforts to undermine the civil rights leader and his movement.
