💥💥💥 2025.07.21 According to a new report from the National Association of Realtors, Chinese buyers have been highly active in the U.S. real estate market. Over the past year, Chinese buyers purchased $13.7 billion worth of homes. Chinese buyers alone accounted for nearly 12,000 existing home sales, with an average purchase price exceeding $1.1 million, compared to just over $700,000 for all foreign buyers. While I’m not surprised that Chinese people are trying to move money out of China, I am surprised at how easy it seems to be. How does the Chinese government even allow someone to take out a million or two million dollars in cash to buy a house?

Gordon Chang: From April 2024 to March this year, Chinese home purchases surged by 83%. The only explanation I can think of is that this is capital flight. In a sense, this is a warning sign about what’s happening inside China. The Chinese people are voting with their feet and their money, and they’re choosing the United States.

The Chinese government does not allow this to happen. The rule in China is that each citizen can take out $50,000 per year. What’s actually happening is a wholesale violation of China’s foreign exchange laws, which shows how dire the situation in China is. China’s economy is not growing at the 5.2% pace they claim for Q2; it’s likely close to zero or contracting. The Chinese people simply want to leave their country.
