Fulfill God’s Calling with One Simple Word
"What do you want to be when you grow up?" That's a question most of us heard as a child. Figuring out the answer to that question is often a lifelong quest for many. On average, people change their careers 5-7 times before landing on what they feel is fulfilling.
As Christians, there's another "life question" we may ask ourselves or ask God in prayer: "How do I fulfill what God wills for my life?" Many of us search for God’s calling on our life. Perhaps we worry that we are not fulfilling His will.
The good news is that God has provided us with His precious Word to guide us to His calling. We don't have to search aimlessly or try out various vocations to find God's purpose for us.
Apostle Paul teaches us in Colossians 3:17, "whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus"
In all that we do, we are to represent Christ. How do we do that?
Jesus teaches us in Matthew 22:37-39,
[37] Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ [38] This is the first and greatest commandment. [39] And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
What do these two greatest commandments have to do with our calling? Let us look at 1 John 4:16-17,
[16] ...God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. [17] This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.
In whatever we do, we are to love God and love our neighbors and by doing so we imitate Jesus in this world. Apostle Paul teaches us in Ephesians 5:1-2,
[1] Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. [2] Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.
That passage sums up God's calling for each of us: "Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ."
God’s calling on your life is not meant to be a puzzling treasure hunt. We don't have to lead a ministry, write a book, run a non-profit, or have a specific career. God has made it as simple as one word: Love.
Through giving selfless love, we serve others, we care for others, we strive to give our best in our jobs, families and neighborhoods. Through giving selfless love, we honor and glorify God, and we represent Christ in all that we do. In doing so, we fulfill God's calling.
