China Starts Building Brahmaputra "Mega Dam" In Tibet Near India Border | Spotlight | N18G  

China launched construction of a massive $167 billion hydropower dam on the Brahmaputra River, less than 100 kilometres from the India border, triggering concern across the region. The dam's location at the "Great Bend" of the river — before it flows into India and Bangladesh — gives Beijing potential control over critical water resources. While China claims the project will power over 300 million homes, experts and Indian officials warn it could be a strategic tool, not just infrastructure. An Australian think-tank in its August 2024 report noted the dam may allow China to store or withhold water as geopolitical leverage, especially during times of conflict. India's government, as per a February 2025 parliamentary response, says it remains "engaged" on the issue, but past tensions saw China suspend water-data sharing twice. As warnings grow louder — including from the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh — the big question remains: Is this hydropower, or a new form of power play?
