Sermon on unity of covenants - Lords day July 20th, 2025 - Trinity Reformed Church
Supplementation not supplanting. The relationship between God and His people. Found in the phrase. I shall be our God and you shall be my people. My special possession.
Gen 17:7 - this teaches this covenant will continue. Under the mosaic covenant we do see it. They are delivered to be in a relationship with Him. They must be delivered from corruption. I will take you as my people. I will be your God. Exodus 19:4-5. Repeated phrases I will be your God and you will be my people. Renewing the covenant Deuteronomy 29:13. 2 Kings 11:17, 2 Chronicles 23:16, Ezekiel 34:24 the heart of the covenants related to David. Jesus is the representative for the people. The new covenant. Zac 2:11 (many nations shall be joined with the Lord in that day). Zac is not just talking about Jews but gentiles.. The promise to Abrahams seed wasn't just Jews in the flesh but to all those who believe. (Romans 4). In the new covenant there is a continuity of the old covenants. Jeremiah 31:31 - there is new but a clear connection. Jeremiah 32:39. John 6 "everyone who has been taught by the Father comes to me" 2 Corinth 3:6 a minister of the new covenant. Hebrews 8:6-13 all connected to the house of Israel and Judah which is now including the gentiles. Hebrews 10:15 - All these covenants were leading to Christ and fulfilled in Christ. 2 Corinthians 6:16-17, Lev 11:44 - a picture of God redeeming His people.

2 Corinthians 6:16-17 (NKJV) 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among [them]. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.” 17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”

Hebrews 8:8-13 (NKJV) 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah-- 9 “not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the LORD. 10 “For this [is] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 “None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 13 In that He says, “A new [covenant,]” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

Deuteronomy 29:13 (NKJV) “that He may establish you today as a people for Himself, and [that] He may be God to you, just as He has spoken to you, and just as He has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Exodus 19:4-5 (NKJV) 4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and [how] I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. 5 ‘Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth [is] Mine.
