The American Healthcare System is a Sick Joke (And We’re All the Punchline)

While driving home from St. Louis, I was passed by a car that had a message plastered across the back windshield: “Kidney Donor Needed.”

Blood type.

Email address.

Phone number.

Desperation written in dry-erase.

And that moment—watching someone literally crowdsource for an organ on the interstate—sums up everything wrong with the American healthcare system in a single, absurd image.

It’s a dark, ridiculous, and all-too-real world of healthcare in the United States and if you’ve ever felt like you needed a second mortgage just to schedule a checkup—or wondered why GoFundMe has replaced health insurance for half the country—unfortunately, I can’t help.

I’ve as many questions as you do.

The United States is the only country on Earth where your credit score matters more than your cholesterol levels.

Where the cost of an ambulance ride could bankrupt you faster than the accident itself.

Where we treat healthcare like a luxury, not a human right.

And sure, maybe you think I’m being dramatic. But ask yourself: Why do we accept this? Why is the richest country in the world still using windshield pleas as part of its organ donation infrastructure?
