Plato - Laches (On Courage)

In Laches, Socrates joins a discussion with two Athenian generals, Laches and Nicias, as they debate whether young boys should be trained in fighting with armor. The conversation quickly shifts from the topic of military training to a deeper philosophical question: What is courage? Socrates leads the group in examining various definitions, including courage as standing firm in battle, as wise endurance, and as knowledge of what is truly to be feared or hoped for. Through his characteristic method of questioning (elenchus), Socrates reveals contradictions in each definition. By the end of the dialogue, none of the men can confidently define courage, though all agree on the importance of continuing to seek wisdom. The dialogue ends with the humorous suggestion that they should all go to school together to learn more.
