Transporting heavy building materials to space is incredibly expensive. But Harvard’s Robin Wordsworth and their team have found a game changing alternative: bioplastics made from algae.

Algae grows fast, releases oxygen, and can be produced in space. The team developed 3D printed chambers that grow algae in Mars like conditions. The algae is then processed into bioplastics like polylactic acid. The result is a closed loop system that mimics Earth’s ecosystems—green, efficient, and self sustaining.

This innovation could make space colonization affordable and sustainable while reshaping how we think about materials here on Earth.
