Greenland's ice sheet, the second largest on Earth, is experiencing unprecedented melting, now losing about 300 billion tons of ice annually—six times the rate observed in the 1990s. This acceleration is caused by warmer oceans, longer summer melt seasons, and feedback loops where melting ice exposes darker surfaces that absorb more solar radiation. The ice sheet's natural equilibrium has shifted, with summer melting consistently exceeding winter accumulation. This melting contributes significantly to the rise of the global sea level (about 0.8mm annually), threatening coastal communities worldwide with increased flooding and potential economic damage that is estimated to reach 1.8% of global GDP by 2080. Beyond rising seas, the freshwater influx is altering North Atlantic ocean circulation, including a 15% slowdown of the Gulf Stream since the mid-20th century, affecting marine ecosystems, fisheries, and potentially European weather patterns. According to the Advanced monitoring systems project, Greenland could lose 8-11% of its ice mass by 2100, continuing for centuries even if global temperatures stabilize at the Paris Agreement target.
