Dubai has launched Bustanica, the world's largest vertical farm, spanning 330,000 square feet in the desert landscape. This $40 million joint venture between Emirates Flight Catering and Crop One will produce over 1,000,000 kilograms of leafy greens annually, equivalent to 250 acres of conventional farmland. Using hydroponic systems that reduce water consumption by 95%, AI-controlled environments, and LED lighting powered by renewable energy, the farm operates year-round regardless of external climate conditions. This innovation addresses the UAE's food security concerns, as it imports 90% of its food. The project represents a paradigm shift in agriculture, creating ideal growing conditions in one of Earth's most challenging environments while eliminating pesticides, reducing transportation costs, and creating skilled technical jobs. The UAE government plans to establish 12 similar facilities by 2025 to produce 50% of its food domestically by 2051.
