A 2024 experiment in Switzerland, called "Deus in Machina," involved an AI avatar of Jesus set up in a confessional booth to interact with visitors at St. Peter's Chapel in Lucerne. The project, undertaken by theologians and scientists from the University of Lucerne, aimed to explore the interaction between the divine and the digital and examine human trust in machines, according to WSYR. While the project was met with positive responses from visitors, it also sparked controversy, with some calling it blasphemous or sacrilegious. The creators emphasized that the AI was not intended to replace a priest or traditional confession but rather to provoke thought and discussion about faith in a digital age. The "AI Jesus" was capable of conversing in approximately 100 languages, reports NBC News.
