The story of the People of Lut(AS)

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 111th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe, The story of the People of Lut (Lot) (AS)

The story of the People of Lut (Lot) (AS) is one of the most powerful and frequently mentioned accounts in the Qur’an, highlighting the consequences of moral corruption, disobedience, and rejection of divine guidance. Prophet Lut (AS) was sent by Allah to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, cities known for widespread wickedness, particularly the sin of homosexuality, which was unprecedented among earlier nations. Instead of turning to righteousness and reforming themselves, the people of L?t arrogantly rejected his message and mocked him, which ultimately led to their complete and devastating destruction by the command of Allah.

In Surah Al-A‘raf verses 80-81, Allah says:

“And [We had sent] Lut when he said to his people, ‘Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds? Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people.’”

This verse reflects the core of Lut’s warning. He called out their unnatural and sinful behavior and reminded them of the natural order created by Allah. However, his people responded with hostility and mockery. Rather than correcting their ways, they challenged him and even threatened to expel him from their town.

In Surah Ash-Shu‘ara verses 165-166, Lut questioned their behavior again:

“Do you approach males among the worlds, and leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a transgressing people.”

Despite his continuous preaching and advice, they turned away and continued in sin. Allah mentions their response in Surah Al-Naml verse 56:

“But the answer of his people was nothing except that they said, ‘Expel the family of Lut from your city. Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure!’”

This mocking reply reveals how far they had strayed from righteousness—seeing purity and piety as threats to their corrupt lifestyle.

When all warnings failed, Allah sent His angels to Prophet Ibrahim (AS) first, to give him glad tidings of a son, and then informed him of their next mission—to destroy the people of L?t. This is narrated in Surah Hud verses 69-76. The angels then came to Lut in the form of handsome young men, and upon seeing them, the corrupt men of the town rushed to L?t’s house with evil intentions. Lut (AS) was deeply distressed and helpless. He said, as recorded in Surah Hud verse 78:

“O my people, these are my daughters; they are purer for you. So fear Allah and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not among you a man of reason?”

But the people refused to listen.

Then the angels revealed their true identity and told L?t to leave the town with his followers before dawn, without looking back. The punishment was set. In Surah Al-Hijr verse 73-74, Allah describes the destruction:

“So the shriek seized them at sunrise. And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.”

Allah’s punishment came in multiple forms—an earthquake, an overpowering sound (sai?ah), the city being turned upside down, and a rain of stones from the sky.

In Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 4720, it is reported:

“When the Prophet (PBUH) passed by the ruins of the people of L?t, he hastened his pace and lowered his head until he passed the area.”

This action of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reflects the gravity of the punishment that befell those people and serves as a lesson for all Muslims to avoid places of divine wrath unless for learning and reflection.

Allah concludes in Surah Al-Dhariyat verse 37:

“And We left therein a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.”

The ruins of these cities near the Dead Sea serve as a powerful reminder of the end of a people who defied Allah’s law and indulged in sin without remorse. The story of the people of Lut (AS) stands as a timeless warning for humanity against immorality, arrogance, and the rejection of prophetic guidance.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
