The punishment of the people of Thamud by a violent earthquake

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 110th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,The punishment of the people of Thamud by a violent earthquake

The punishment of the nation of Thamud by a violent earthquake is one of the most terrifying and terrifying events recorded in the Quran. The nation of Thamud was a prosperous and powerful nation, famous for their skill in carving houses and monuments into the mountains in a region called Al-Jar. Despite their advancement, they were spiritually bankrupt and refused to accept the message of Prophet Salih (AS), whom Allah sent as a warner and guide. They worshipped idols and denied the oneness of Allah. When they demanded a miracle, Allah granted them the miraculous she-camel, as a test and a sign. But instead of believing, they disrespected the miracle and killed the camel, leading to their ultimate destruction by a **violent earthquake and a mighty blast** from the sky.

In Surah Hud verse 67, Allah clearly describes the punishment:

"So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone."

This sudden and intense earthquake flattened their magnificent stone homes, and the people were left lifeless, their bodies collapsed on the ground, as if they had never flourished there. Despite their strength and achievements, they could not resist the wrath of Allah. Their punishment came as a direct consequence of disobedience and arrogance after rejecting divine truth.

Further, in Surah Al-A‘raf verse 78, Allah says:

"So the earthquake seized them, and they lay [dead] in their homes."

This verse emphasizes the suddenness and completeness of the punishment. The earthquake was not just a natural disaster, but a divine decree executed by the command of Allah. The entire tribe was wiped out in a moment. Their luxurious homes, carved in the safety of mountains, could not shield them from the divine torment.

The punishment was preceded by a final warning. After the people of Tham?d killed the she-camel, Prophet Salih (AS) warned them that they had only three days to enjoy themselves before Allah’s punishment would befall them. This is mentioned in Surah Hud verse 65:

"But they hamstrung her, so he said, 'Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days – that is a promise not to be denied.'"**
Despite the warning, the people mocked Prophet Salih and refused to repent. They plotted even to kill him, but Allah saved him and the believers, and then fulfilled His promise by destroying the evildoers.

In Surah Fussilat verse 17, the Qur’an further elaborates:
"As for Tham?d, We gave them guidance, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the blast of a humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn."

Here, Allah highlights the root cause of their destruction: their willful rejection of guidance. The punishment came not out of cruelty, but as a response to repeated denial, arrogance, and sinful behavior, despite being given every opportunity to repent.

In the Hadith of Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2980, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is reported to have said:

"The most wicked man among the Tham?d was the one who slaughtered the she-camel, and Allah destroyed them with a single cry that overtook them all, leaving no one behind."**
This hadith confirms that a single blast—interpreted in the Qur’an as a combination of a sound wave and earthquake—was sufficient to annihilate an entire civilization.

The ruins of the Thamud still remain in the region of Al-hijr (Mada'in Salih) in Saudi Arabia. These ruins stand as a testament to their existence and downfall. In Surah Al-hijr verses 82-83, Allah reminds us:

"And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure. But the shriek seized them at early morning."

This sense of false security—believing their engineering and strength would protect them—was shattered when the punishment came upon them without warning.

The punishment of the Tham?d by a violent earthquake is not just a historical event, but a divine warning to all people and nations. It teaches that **rejecting the truth after it becomes clear, and persisting in arrogance and sin, leads to destruction. It also shows that worldly power, wealth, and status cannot save anyone from the judgment of Allah. These verses and hadiths serve as timeless lessons for believers to remain humble, obedient, and responsive to divine guidance.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
