The story of the People of Salih

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 108th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,The story of the People of Salih

The story of the People of Salih, also known as the Thamud, is a powerful reminder in the Qur'an of what happens when divine guidance is rejected. The Thamud were an ancient Arabian tribe who lived after the destruction of the ‘?d people, in a place called Al-Hijr (modern-day Mada'in Salih in Saudi Arabia). Allah sent to them Prophet Salih (AS) as a warner and a guide. They were well known for their architectural achievements, carving grand homes out of mountains, and living in material prosperity. Despite this worldly success, they turned to idol worship and arrogance, refusing to submit to the One true God.

In Surah Al-A‘raf verse 73, Allah says:
"And to Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. This is the she-camel of Allah [sent] to you as a sign. So leave her to eat within Allah’s land and do not touch her with harm, lest there seize you a painful punishment.'"

This verse reflects the core message of all prophets: monotheism. Prophet Salih (AS) called his people to worship Allah alone, and as a miracle and a test for them, Allah sent a unique she-camel who emerged from a rock by His command.

However, despite this divine miracle, most of the Thamud disbelieved and conspired to kill the camel. In Surah Ash-Shams verse 11-14, Allah says:

"Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, when the most wicked of them was sent forth. And the messenger of Allah said to them, '[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent] her from drinking.' But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal upon all of them."**

The killing of the she-camel was the final act of rebellion. Prophet Salih warned them of Allah’s punishment, giving them a respite of three days. Yet they continued in their mockery. The Qur’an mentions in Surah Al-Qamar verse 31:

"So We sent upon them one shriek – and they became like the dry twig fragments of an \[animal] pen."

This terrifying punishment was a mighty blast from the sky that destroyed all of them, leaving no survivors except those who believed and followed Salih.

According to Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith 3378), the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said during his expedition to Tabuk when they passed by the ruins of the Thamud:

"Do not enter the ruins of those who were unjust to themselves unless you are weeping, lest what befell them befall you."**
This hadith emphasizes the seriousness of their fate and serves as a warning to later generations.

The people of Thamud are also mentioned in Surah Al-Hijr verses 80-84:

"And certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers. And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away. And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure. But the shriek seized them at early morning. So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn."

From these verses and hadith, several important lessons emerge. First, miracles alone are not enough for people to believe if arrogance and pride blind their hearts. Second, Allah’s punishment is swift and severe when warnings are ignored. And third, history serves as a reminder for all future generations. The ruins of the Thamud still exist today in Mada'in Salih as a clear sign, as mentioned in **Surah Al-Hijr**, that once-powerful nations were reduced to dust due to their disobedience and denial of truth.

The story of Prophet Salih (AS) and the Thamud people encourages us to reflect on our own actions and turn back to the worship of Allah, obeying His messengers, and learning from the fate of those who came before us. As Allah says in Surah Al-Fajr (verses 6-9:
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad –[With] Iram – who had lofty pillars, the likes of whom had never been created in the land And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?"

These reminders aim to awaken hearts and prevent mankind from repeating the same tragic mistakes.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
