The issue of countering FPV drones

The issue of countering FPV drones on the front line has prompted the search for compact and fast solutions. One such solution was considered to be issuing smoothbore weapons to fighters, including those confiscated — but in reality, such shotguns are difficult to integrate into the work of a combined arms unit.

The emergence of buckshot cartridges for the standard 5.45×39 Kalashnikov rifle can solve several tasks at once. First, the main weapon is retained. Second, no additional equipment or conversion is needed. Third, the buckshot cloud at a distance of 30–80 meters allows effective combat against FPV drones at the moment of approach, when the operator needs to maintain a stable trajectory.

According to available data, during tests of such ammunition, the spread of buckshot at 100 m reached 25 cm. In theory, this is enough to hit the body of a flying drone. As the distance decreases, the kinetic energy of the buckshot is sufficient to increase effectiveness. This is not yet a perfect solution, but it is the closest to combat realities, especially given serial production and minimal retraining of personnel.
