The Sogon bird is a common term in Indonesia for several species of small birds from the Estrildidae family, especially those belonging to the genus Lonchura or Amandava. However, in various regions, the name "sogon" can refer to different birds depending on their color and species.

Commonly Encountered Sogon Birds:

1. Red-headed Sogon (Red Avadavat / Amandava amandava)

Distinctive Features: Males are bright red with white spots, especially during the breeding season.

Size: Small, about 10 cm.

Habitat: Rice fields, grasslands, or thickets.

Call: Cheerful and short.

Popular as an ornamental bird due to its beautiful coloration.

2. Green Munia (Green Munia / Amandava formosa)

The dominant color is olive green with white spots.

Rarer than the red-headed sogon.

Also known as the green munia.

3. Local Sogon or Bondol

Some people also call Bondol birds such as the Haji Bondol, Java Bondol, or Black-breasted Bondol as sogon.

They are generally brown or a mix of white and black.
