I'm "disappointed, but not done" with Putin, Trump tells the BBC

Reporting from
Washington
Donald Trump has said he's disappointed, but not done, with Vladimir Putin in an exclusive phone call with the BBC.
Pressed on whether he trusts the Russian leader, the US president replied: "I trust almost no one."
Trump spoke hours after announcing he would send weapons to Ukraine and warned of tough tariffs on Russia if there was no ceasefire agreement in 50 days.
In an Oval Office interview, the president also endorsed NATO, having once called it obsolete, and reiterated his support for the organization's common defense principle.

• How Trump woke me up for a surprise interview
The president made the 20-minute phone call to the BBC following talks about a possible interview to mark one year since the attempt on his life at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Asked if surviving the assassination attempt had changed him, Trump said he liked to think about it as little as possible.
"I don't like to think about whether it's changed me," Trump said. Being up to date, he added, "could be life-changing."
Having just met with NATO chief Mark Rutte at the White House, however, the president spent a significant portion of the interview expanding on his disappointment with the Russian leader.
Trump said he thought a deal to end the war in Ukraine was at stake four times with Russia.

• Trump arms promise marks major step forward for Ukraine
Asked by the BBC if he was done with Putin, the president replied: "I'm disappointed in him, but I'm not done with him. But I am disappointed in him."
Pressed on how Trump would get Putin to "stop the bloodshed," the US president said: "We're working on it, Gary."
"We'll have a great conversation. I'll say, 'That's good, I think we're close to getting there,' and then he'll tear down a building in Kyiv."
Russia has intensified its drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, causing civilian casualties. It has launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbor in 2022.
Putin has insisted he also wants peace, but he said what he calls the "root causes" of the war must be addressed first. He argues that the war is the result of external threats to Russia's security from Kyiv, NATO, and the "collective West."
Listen: "I don't like to dwell on the attempted assassination," Trump tells the BBC
The conversation moved on to NATO, which Trump had previously criticized as "obsolete."
He said he didn't believe that was still the case, as NATO "is now becoming the opposite of that" because the alliance "pays its own bills." Trump said it was "astonishing" that NATO leaders had agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of their economic output.
"Nobody thought that was possible."
He said he still believed in collective defense because it meant smaller countries could defend themselves against larger ones.
Trump said that leaders of countries like Germany, France, and Spain had respected him and his decision-making, in part because world leaders believed there was "a lot of talent" in being elected to the presidency twice.
Asked if world leaders were sometimes "obvious in their flattery," Trump replied that he felt they were "just trying to be nice."

Volcano erupts in Iceland spewing lava from the ground
A volcano has erupted in Iceland spewing out streams of bright yellow and orange lava - the latest in a string of volcanic events in the region in recent years.
Iceland has seen about 12 eruptions since volcanic systems on the Reykjanes peninsula - close to the capital Reykjavik - became active again in 2021.
According to Iceland's meteorological office, magma breaking through the Earth's crust created a large fissure estimated to be between 0.7 and 1km (0.4 to 0.6 miles) long.
Scientists have warned that eruptions in this region could continue for decades or even centuries. 16/17.07.25
