Biography of Du Shuzhen (Islami name Aminah).
Dekhti Aankhooon aur sountay kaanoon ko Asslamoalaikum, sisters, brothers friends and elders, in informative series videos of Islamic Women ascolars, sufisaints, cultural heritages, islamic philosophys, islamic mysticisms and historical women figures. today we are describing biography of Du Shuzhen (Islami name Aminah). .
Du Shuzhen, known by her honorific Islamic name Aminah , was born in 1924 in Kaifeng, Henan Province, China. She hailed from a Hui-Muslim family. After her mother passed away during her childhood, she moved in with her aunt. Her father, following the devastation of their family antique shop during the Second Sino-Japanese War, also assumed the role of an imam.
From the early age of eight, Du Shuzhen entered her local **women’s mosque** where she began her Islamic education, dedicating around six years to studying Islamic theology. At fifteen, she married a Chinese Muslim scholar and relocated to Shanxi. But after her husband's death just two years later, she returned to Kaifeng and continued her Islamic studies, determined to become an imam despite her family's reservations.
Under the tutelage of a female imam, Du delved into **Persian Islamic scholarship, and with the guidance of her uncle (based in Shanghai) and a family friend (from Henan)—both of whom were imams—she further mastered the **Quran in Arabic.
In 1949, Du Shuzhen achieved a major milestone by becoming an imam at the Shifu Mosque in Zhengzhou, Henan. Over subsequent decades, she served in several women's mosques across China—including in Kaifeng, Xingyang, and Xi'an. During the Cultural Revolution, she found sanctuary at the East Mosque in Kaifeng.
In 1981, she was appointed senior Islamic teacher at Beida Street Women’s Mosque in Zhengzhou, and two years later was honoured as its lifelong imam.
In 1992, Du embarked on her first Hajj pilgrimage, becoming the first woman from Henan to perform the ritual. She completed the Hajj three more times: in 1994, 1999, and 2005 ([Muslim Women You Should Know].
A respected grassroots spiritual leader, Du Shuzhen was a member of several Islamic associations, including the Henan Provincial Islamic Association, the Zhengzhou City Islamic Association, and the Chinese Islamic Association. Her work included training female imams, and over her lifetime she mentored more than 70 women destined for leadership in women's mosques ([Muslim Women You Should Know]
As of the most recent records, Du Shuzhen is still alive; she has **not passed away, and therefore there is no date or place of death to report.
There are no sources indicating that Du Shuzhen has a shrine, memorial tomb, or mausoleum dedicated in her honor. While she was deeply respected within the community, significant shrines are generally reserved for canonical religious figures or historical martyrs. Her legacy lives on through the institutions and female imams she nurtured, rather than a physical shrine.
Born in 1924 in Kaifeng, Henan, Du?Shuzhen (Aminah) rose from humble beginnings to become one of China's most significant female imams. After early studies in women's mosques, marriage, and bereavement, she pursued deep Islamic scholarship in Persian and Arabic under the guidance of family and religious mentors. Ordained in 1949, she served at mosques across China, navigated the challenges of the Cultural Revolution, and later held long-term roles as a teacher and lifelong imam in Zhengzhou. She broke ground as the **first Henan woman to perform the Hajj, completing four pilgrimages between 1992 and 2005. Throughout her extensive career, she has been a vital force in nurturing female Islamic leadership—training over 70 imams.
While she continues to live, Du Shuzhen's memory is kept alive not through a shrine, but through the institutions, students, and women's mosques she built and led—an enduring legacy of pioneering scholarship, devotion, and empowerment in Chinese Islamic society.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow, and tomorrow we will be described biography of Eva de Vitray Meyerovitch and history of her shrine, at the end we pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the abilitty to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
Allah Hafiz
