When I first wrote Forged in Fracture, I knew there was more to Riven and Aelis than just the ruins they crawled out of together. Somewhere behind the trauma and cybernetics, there was a beginning—one untouched by war. One still intact.
This short story, Before the Fracture, is that beginning.
Aelis is a bright, idealistic student—naïve, book-smart, and wildly unprepared for the real world. Riven is a human soldier already hardened by blood and loyalty, confident in the way only the reckless can afford to be. They shouldn’t have met. They definitely shouldn’t have mattered to each other.
But they did.
This story exists to show the contrast between who they were and who they became. The Fracture didn’t just split cities—it split them. Broke them. Reforged them into people they might not have recognized in the mirror. This prequel is a glimpse of what could have been, if the world had been kinder.
And maybe—just maybe—a reminder that even in times of peace, the fault lines are already there… waiting.
