Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
In her book Start Where You Are, we have this quote from Pema Chodron. The happiness we seek will not be found by grasping and trying to hold on to things normally. We think the more we acquire or we get something that we strongly want or desire will satisfy us and give us happiness. Pema here is pointing out a very fundamental truth that we hear a lot in Buddhism, that the real happiness that we want, lasting happiness, does not come from acquisition of things, of reaching certain goals, that sort of thing. That's not true happiness. It is a form of temporary happiness, but what Pema Chodron here is reminding us is the goal is not to find things to keep us temporarily satisfied, but to find something that is a lasting happiness. Contentment. Peace of Mind.
