New World screwworm is indeed a fly larva, specifically the larval stage of the New World screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax). These larvae are also known as maggots and are parasitic, meaning they live off of a living host. The USDA has closed the Southern border to beef and there are plans to release a massive number of neutralizing flies. Dr Peter McCulloughâ„¢ and Grant Stinchfield give you the critical update on worm management and where to look for safe meat on Stinchfield the Podcast, July 15, 2025.
