17 – Five Theses on Renaissance

Dr. Williams asks the question: “What is needed for true Reformation and Revival?” and explains, “Though the history of words has mightily obscured this fact, faithful biblical Christianity owes a great debt to humanism—not the secular humanism with which modern Christians are familiar, of course, but a very different kind of humanism that existed in the past: the humanism of the Renaissance. Though contemporary secular humanists share a name and a history with Renaissance humanism, they are very different phenomena indeed. We need to understand the difference to understand our place in intellectual history, and to understand why the Renaissance is a necessary prelude to Reformation. How did the same moment in history give rise to two such contrasting and opposed movements as modern secular humanism and Reformation-based conservative biblical Protestantism (i.e., classical Evangelicalism)? The answer to that question will take us on a fascinating historical journey that has crucial relevance for our present crisis.”
