On June 1, 2025, a gang-related mass shooting at a pool party in Catawba County, near Charlotte, left 58-year-old Shawn Hood dead and 11 others injured. At least 80 shots were fired from a hillside at a crowded "topless pool party" on Walnut Acres Drive. Eight young suspects, some as young as 18, face charges, but outrage erupted when a judge set bonds as low as $75,000 for some, despite prior violent charges.
