Hazrat Hud's call to worship Allah alone and the people’s arrogance
Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 106th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,Hazrat Hud's call to worship Allah alone and the people’s arrogance
The story of Hazrat Hud (peace be upon him) and his call to worship Allah alone is a powerful reminder of the consequences of arrogance and the rejection of divine guidance. Hazrat Hud was sent as a prophet to the people of 'Ad, an ancient tribe known for their strength, prosperity, and arrogance. They lived in the region of the Arabian Peninsula, and their civilization was renowned for its advanced structures and impressive wealth. However, despite these material blessings, the people of 'Ad were deeply entrenched in idol worship and corruption. Hazrat Hud was sent by Allah to guide them, calling them to abandon their false gods and worship Allah alone. His message, however, was met with obstinate rejection and arrogance.
In the Qur'an, Allah tells us about the mission of Hazrat Hud in Surah Hud verses 50-52, where he states: Translation is “And to 'Ad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. You are not but inventors of falsehood. O my people, I do not ask you for any reward for it. My reward is only from the One who created me. Then will you not reason?”** This verse reflects the central message of Hazrat Hud’s prophethood: the call to worship Allah alone and to abandon the worship of idols. He emphasized that his mission was not to gain any personal benefit but to guide his people to the truth, and he urged them to reflect upon their actions and consider the consequences of their arrogance.
The people of 'Ad, however, rejected Hazrat Hud’s message. They responded with pride and mockery, as they believed in their material wealth and power. Their arrogance was evident in the way they dismissed the prophet’s warning. In Surah Al-Ahqaf verses 21-23, Allah describes their reaction: Translation is “And [We sent] to 'Ad their brother Hud. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. You are not but inventors of falsehood. O my people, I do not ask you for any reward for it. My reward is only from the One who created me. Then will you not reason?' But the arrogant among his people said, 'We certainly see you in clear error.'”** Despite the clarity of his message and the signs he brought to them, they mocked him and accused him of being misguided. They believed that their material success and their might were proof of their superiority, and they could not comprehend the idea of submitting to a higher power beyond their own capabilities.
In another verse, Surah Al-Ahqaf verses 24-25, the Qur'an recounts the arrogance of the people of 'Ad: Translation is “And when they saw a cloud approaching their valley, they said, 'This is a cloud bringing us rain!' Rather, it is what you sought to hasten – a wind in which is painful punishment. It destroys everything by the command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen of them except their dwellings.” The people of 'Ad, in their pride, interpreted the approaching storm as a sign of blessing and prosperity. However, Allah revealed that it was not a cloud of rain but a storm of punishment that would destroy them. Their arrogance and disbelief blinded them to the reality of their situation.
The Qur'an also highlights how the people of 'Ad were warned not only by Hazrat Hud but also by the natural signs around them. The prosperity they enjoyed, their towering structures, and their apparent invincibility were gifts from Allah, but they failed to recognize these as signs of His mercy. In Surah Ash-Shams verses 6-10, Allah describes the characteristics of a people who choose to reject righteousness: Translation is “And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it, and inspired it with its wickedness and its righteousness, he has succeeded who purifies it, and he has failed who instills it with corruption.”** This divine warning was meant to prompt self-reflection and humility, yet the people of 'Ad failed to heed it.
Hazrat Hud’s persistence in calling his people towards the truth is also reflected in the Hadith literature. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned the believers about the arrogance of past nations. In a Hadith narrated in *Sahih Muslim*, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, **“The people of 'Ad were the most arrogant of people, and they said, ‘Who is greater than us in strength?’ But when the punishment of Allah came upon them, they could not escape it.”** This Hadith serves as a stark reminder of the fate of those who are blinded by pride and arrogance, thinking that their strength and material wealth can protect them from divine punishment.
In another Hadith of Sunan Ibn Majah, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Do not be like the people of 'Ad who rejected the signs of Allah and were destroyed by the wind.” . The wind here refers to the powerful storm that wiped out the people of 'Ad, a divine punishment for their arrogance and their rejection of the message of their prophet.
The lesson from Hazrat Hud’s story is clear: arrogance, pride, and the refusal to acknowledge the Oneness of Allah lead to destruction. The people of 'Ad were given ample opportunity to repent and follow the guidance of Hazrat Hud, but their material wealth and perceived strength blinded them to the reality of their situation. In the end, their arrogance became their undoing. Allah's punishment took the form of a devastating wind that lasted for several days, annihilating the disbelievers and leaving no trace of their civilization. This event is a reminder for all of us to remain humble, to acknowledge our dependence on Allah, and to turn to Him in worship and submission, recognizing that no material possession or strength can shield us from His power.
The people of 'Ad’s arrogance, as depicted in the Qur'an and Hadith, serves as a timeless warning to all those who think their worldly achievements can defy the will of Allah. It teaches us the importance of humility and the futility of placing our trust in anything other than the Almighty. Just as the people of 'Ad perished because of their refusal to listen to the truth, we too must be cautious of the destructive nature of arrogance and pride in our own lives.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
Allah Hafiz
