Temptation of Adam and Hawwa (Eve) and their expulsion
Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 103th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe, Temptation of Adam and Hawwa (Eve) and their expulsion
The temptation of Adam (AS) and Hawwa (AS) and their eventual expulsion from Paradise is a pivotal narrative in Islamic theology that reflects the nature of human vulnerability, the mercy of Allah, and the beginning of human life on Earth. According to the Qur'an, Adam and Hawwa were created by Allah and placed in Paradise, where they lived in peace and were granted many blessings. However, they were given one command: to avoid a specific tree. This divine instruction was a test, not due to the tree’s intrinsic nature, but to determine their obedience to Allah. In Surah Al-Baqarah verses 35–36, Allah says: Translation is “And We said, ‘O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.’ But Satan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said, ‘Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time.’” These verses show how Allah granted Adam and Hawwa freedom in Paradise, with only one prohibition. Satan (Iblis), expelled from Paradise due to his arrogance, sought revenge by tempting them into disobedience, exploiting their human susceptibility to suggestion.
The Qur'an further elaborates on the temptation in Surah Al-A'raf verses 20–22: Translation is “Then Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, ‘Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal.’ And he swore [by Allah] to them, ‘Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors.’ So he made them fall through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, ‘Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?’” Here, the deceitful strategy of Satan is made clear: he uses lies and false promises to lure Adam and Hawwa into violating Allah’s command. He manipulates their desire for immortality and wisdom, promising what he cannot deliver. This act of disobedience led to their spiritual fall and physical expulsion from Paradise.
Despite their error, the Qur'an emphasizes that Adam and Hawwa were not abandoned. They recognized their mistake and turned to Allah in sincere repentance. In Surah Al-A’raf verse 23, their heartfelt plea is recorded: Translation is “They said, ‘Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.’” This powerful verse distinguishes the human capacity for repentance from the arrogance of Iblis. While Iblis refused to accept his wrongdoing, Adam and Hawwa immediately sought Allah’s forgiveness. This sincere repentance was accepted by Allah, showing His mercy and readiness to forgive those who turn to Him with humility.
In Surah Taha verse 21–122, Allah again confirms His mercy: Translation is “And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred. Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].” This shows that even after the sin, Adam remained beloved to Allah. He was forgiven, guided, and appointed as the first prophet to humankind. The expulsion from Paradise was not merely a punishment but also a part of the divine plan to send humanity to Earth, where they would live, strive, and be tested before returning to Allah in the Hereafter.
Hadith literature complements this story by further emphasizing the role of repentance. In a narration from Sahih Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad PBUH said: “When Adam committed his sin, he said: ‘O Lord, I ask You for forgiveness by the right of Muhammad.’ Allah said: ‘O Adam, how do you know about Muhammad when I have not yet created him?’ Adam replied: ‘Because when You created me, I lifted my head and saw written on the Throne: La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur Rasulullah. So I knew that You would not put anyone’s name next to Yours except the most beloved of creation.’ Allah said: ‘You have spoken the truth, O Adam, and were it not for Muhammad, I would not have created you.’” This hadith, though interpreted in various ways, illustrates the spiritual foresight of Adam and his deep reliance on Allah’s mercy.
Another hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari affirms Allah’s mercy towards Adam and his descendants: “All of the children of Adam are sinners, and the best of sinners are those who repent.” This reflects a central teaching in Islam: human beings are not expected to be perfect, but they are expected to return to Allah in repentance when they err. Adam’s story becomes a model for all of humanity—not because he never sinned, but because he turned to his Lord after sinning.
In conclusion, the story of Adam and Hawwa’s temptation and expulsion from Paradise is rich with moral and spiritual lessons. It teaches the importance of obedience to Allah, the dangers of listening to falsehood, and most importantly, the value of sincere repentance. It affirms that while human beings are susceptible to error, they are also capable of turning back to their Creator, who is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful. Through Qur’anic verses and authentic hadiths, the narrative serves as a profound reminder of both human weakness and divine compassion.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
