Iblis’ refusal and his expulsion from Paradise

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 102th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,Iblis’ refusal and his expulsion from Paradise

The story of Iblis’ refusal to obey Allah’s command and his subsequent expulsion from Paradise is a foundational narrative in Islamic theology, illustrating the consequences of pride, disobedience, and rebellion against divine authority. This story is mentioned multiple times in the Qur’an, each time emphasizing different aspects of Iblis’ arrogance and the justice of Allah’s response. Iblis was among the jinn, a creation made from smokeless fire, and he was granted a high status among the angels due to his worship. However, his pride became evident when Allah created Adam (AS) and commanded all the angels to prostrate before him. In **Surah Al-Baqarah verse 34, Allah says, Translation is “And [mention] when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate before Adam'; so they prostrated, except for Iblis. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.”** This verse encapsulates the central elements of Iblis’ downfall: refusal, arrogance, and disbelief. Unlike the angels, who submitted without question, Iblis allowed his pride to override his obedience to Allah, falsely believing that his origin from fire made him superior to Adam, who was created from clay.

This disobedience is further elaborated in Surah Al-A’raf verses 12–13, where Allah directly questions Iblis “[Allah] said, ‘What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?’ [Iblis] said, ‘I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.’ [Allah] said, ‘Then get down from Paradise. It is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased.’”** Here, the root cause of Iblis’ defiance is exposed—his belief in his own superiority. This verse shows that arrogance is not only a moral flaw but a spiritual disease that leads to destruction. Allah makes it clear that arrogance has no place in His divine presence, and as a result, Iblis is cast out of Paradise, disgraced and dishonored.

The narrative continues in **Surah Sad verses 75–77, where Allah again confronts Iblis “[Allah] said, ‘O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands? Were you arrogant [then], or were you already among the haughty?’ He said, ‘I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.’ [Allah] said, ‘Then get out of Paradise, for indeed, you are expelled.’” This dialogue highlights Iblis’ stubbornness and his unrepentant heart. Rather than seeking forgiveness, he doubles down on his arrogance, reinforcing his separation from Allah’s mercy. His refusal becomes not just a single act of disobedience, but the beginning of an eternal rebellion.

The Hadith literature also provides significant details about Iblis' expulsion and his future intentions. In a narration from Sahih Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad PBUH said “When Allah created Adam, He commanded the angels to prostrate to him. They did so, but Iblis refused. So Allah said, ‘I will expel you from Paradise, and My curse shall be upon you until the Day of Judgment. ” This hadith reiterates the Qur’anic narrative while emphasizing the gravity of Iblis’ sin. Not only is he expelled from Paradise, but he is also cursed by Allah—a curse that lasts until the end of time. This eternal curse is a direct result of Iblis' unwillingness to submit to divine authority and his persistent pride.

Despite his expulsion, Iblis did not give up his defiance. Instead, he sought permission from Allah to mislead Adam and his descendants. In Surah Al-Hijr verses 39–40 , Iblis declares “He said, ‘My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make disobedience attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all, except, among them, Your chosen servants.’” This verse demonstrates Iblis’ twisted reasoning—he blames Allah for his own disobedience and vows to lead humanity astray. However, he acknowledges that he will not be able to misguide the sincere and righteous servants of Allah. This sets the stage for the ongoing spiritual struggle between good and evil, a test that all of Adam’s descendants must face.

Iblis' arrogance and expulsion also serve as a powerful lesson for humanity. In contrast to Iblis, Adam (AS), when he sinned by eating from the forbidden tree, immediately turned to Allah in repentance. This stark contrast highlights the difference between a humble servant who errs but repents and one who sins and persists in arrogance. In Surah Taha verses 121–122, it is mentioned “And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred. Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].” While both Adam and Iblis disobeyed Allah, only Adam sought forgiveness, while Iblis clung to pride. This reveals a deep moral principle in Islam: it is not the sin itself, but the refusal to repent and the pride in sinning that leads to ruin.

In conclusion, the story of Iblis’ refusal and expulsion from Paradise is not merely an account of a supernatural being’s downfall, but a timeless reminder of the dangers of arrogance and disobedience. Through Qur’anic verses and authentic Hadiths, this narrative teaches that honor in the sight of Allah comes not from one’s origin or knowledge, but from humility and submission to His will. The legacy of Iblis serves as a warning to humanity to avoid pride, to obey the Creator, and to always seek His forgiveness when one errs.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
