Creation of Adam and the command to angels to prostrate

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 101th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe, Creation of Adam and the command to angels to prostrate

The creation of Adam (AS) holds a profound significance in Islamic theology, not only as the first human being but as the beginning of humanity's story. According to Islamic tradition, Adam’s creation is a divine act that marks the commencement of life on Earth and the purpose of human existence. The Qur'an and Hadith literature provide rich insights into this event, underscoring the dignity of human beings, the command to angels to prostrate, and the consequences of defying that command.

In Surah Al-Baqarah verse 30, Allah (SWT) addresses the creation of Adam and the appointment of him as the vicegerent (khalifah) on Earth. The verse reads:

translation is “And when your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority (khalifah).’ They said, ‘Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?’ He said, ‘Indeed, I know that which you do not know.

This verse not only introduces Adam as the first human, but it also emphasizes the unique position he holds as Allah's representative on Earth. Despite the angels’ question, Allah’s knowledge surpasses their understanding, signaling that humans, although capable of causing corruption, also have the potential for great virtue and obedience to Allah’s commands.

Following the creation of Adam (AS), Allah (SWT) commanded the angels to prostrate before him as an acknowledgment of his special status. This command is mentioned in several places in the Qur’an, one of which is in Surah Al-Hijr verse 29, which states:

Translation is “So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down to him in prostration.

This moment signifies the distinction of Adam (AS) among the creations of Allah. Allah instructs the angels to prostrate not in worship of Adam, but in recognition of his elevated status and the special spirit granted to him by Allah. The prostration is an act of honoring the divine wisdom in Adam’s creation.

However, despite this clear command, Iblis (Satan), who was one of the jinn and not an angel, refused to obey. In Surah Al-A'raf verse 12, Allah (SWT) recounts the defiance of Iblis:

Translation is “[Allah] said, ‘What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?’ \[Iblis] said, ‘I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.

Iblis' refusal to prostrate was rooted in pride and arrogance. He believed his creation from fire made him superior to Adam, created from clay. This act of defiance marked Iblis as the first being to reject the divine command, a choice that would lead to his downfall and eternal damnation. His arrogance and disobedience are a significant lesson in the Qur'an, emphasizing the destructive nature of pride and the consequences of defying Allah’s orders.

The hadith literature also expands on this event. One well-known hadith, found in Sahih Muslim, speaks to the honor of Adam and the command of prostration:

Sahih Muslim said "When Allah created Adam, He rubbed his back and all the souls of his descendants came out. Every soul that He took from his back was assigned its place in Paradise or Hell, but He knew best the end of each soul. Then He said, ‘I will create a servant for Myself, and I will instruct the angels to prostrate to him.

This hadith highlights the spiritual connection between all humans, as the souls of Adam’s descendants were taken from him even before their physical creation. It also reiterates the fact that Allah’s command to prostrate was not an act of worship but a recognition of Adam’s status.

Another narration from Sahih al-Bukhari gives further insight into the unique nature of this event. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated:

"When Allah created Adam, He commanded the angels to prostrate to him, and they all prostrated except Iblis. He was too proud and became one of the disbelievers."

This hadith underscores the pivotal moment when Iblis' refusal to bow to Adam marked the beginning of his rebellion against Allah. His pride not only led him to disobey Allah's command but also initiated the cycle of temptation and rebellion that would follow throughout human history.

The command to prostrate to Adam (AS) highlights a significant moment in the Qur’an and Hadith, where obedience to Allah’s will becomes central to the story of creation. This act of prostration is symbolic, representing the acknowledgment of Allah’s wisdom and authority in creating Adam as His vicegerent on Earth. In contrast, Iblis’ refusal serves as a warning against arrogance and disobedience, offering a lesson that transcends time.

The narrative of Adam's creation and the prostration of angels teaches valuable lessons: the importance of humility, submission to divine will, and the potential for humans to fall into arrogance, as exemplified by Iblis. Furthermore, the event emphasizes the honor and responsibility bestowed upon Adam and his descendants, reminding us of our purpose as caretakers of the Earth, a role entrusted to us by the Creator.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
