Heavy rains and flash flooding sweep across Northeast U.S.

Heavy rain caused flash flooding across parts of New York and New Jersey on Monday night, stranding vehicles, shutting down subway lines, and prompting New Jersey’s governor to declare a state of emergency.

Roads were closed, some transit lines suspended or delayed, and emergency crews carried out rescues in submerged vehicles.

While flooding hit areas like Manhattan and Westchester County hard, officials advised residents to avoid travel unless evacuating, the Associated Press has reported.

By late Monday, some areas reported receding water levels.
