Zorro author Johnston McCulley found inspiration from a variety of sources including Robin Hood, but also from historical and legendary figures like Joaquin Murrieta Carrillo.
Known as the Robin Hood of the West or Robin Hood of El Dorado, Joaquin was a wronged 49er from Sonora, Mexico who, instead of finding gold, found a calling for revenge and murder. However, little documented history is available to legitimize his existence.
From avenging his brother's wrongful hanging to avenging his wife's rape at the hands of goldminers, Murrieta came to symbolize the resistance toward the Anglo-American expansion of Manifest Destiny.
