Fibromyalgia Support: Understanding Root Causes and Effective Steps Toward Healing

If you or someone you love deals with chronic pain, you know it can be relentless. For years, Martin Pytela and Scott Paton from Life Enthusiast have been taking on these tough subjects, especially as they relate to fibromyalgia and the invisible struggles that come along with it. In their recent Health Coach Corner episode, they tackle not just how chronic pain comes about, but what we can do to address its root causes, without falling for the “magic pill” myth we’re so often fed.

Chronic Pain Starts with Inflammation (and the Gut)
Martin opens with a crucial point: "Chronic pain is the result of chronic inflammation because inflammation is one of the five symptoms of the body trying to fix itself." Redness, swelling, heat, pain, and loss of function are warning signals, not random occurrences.

But where does this chronic inflammation begin? All too often, Martin emphasizes, it's in the gut. Overexposure to toxic chemicals—especially from non-organic foods laden with pesticides and glyphosate—destroys our beneficial microbes. Once your gut flora is damaged, problems ripple outward into the rest of your body.
He explains, “If we break the gut by breaking the microbes, there’s no getting back together, there’s no fixing it until you fix it from within.”

The Role of Toxins in Daily Life
The Health Coach Corner duo is adamant: the North American industrial food system is not doing us any favors. From pesticide-laden grains to chemical preservatives and artificial fragrances in everything from beauty products to laundry detergents, our environment overloads us with toxins that disrupt the body's natural processes.

Martin pulls no punches: “I think that we have to eat organic because the non-organic is essentially toxic. Wheat, chickpeas, lentils, corn—they’re all grown with glyphosate, which is an antibiotic that kills the microbes within, leading to leaky gut… and, in turn, to autoimmune-type conditions.”

First Steps for Healing: Stop Digging the Hole Deeper
Scott asks the obvious (but rarely answered) question: Where do you even begin? Martin’s answer is practical—“If you’re in a hole, stop digging." That means:
Clean up your air: Choose houseplants, use filtration, and eliminate artificial scents (which are often volatile organic compounds).
Clean your water: Use filtration or reverse osmosis, avoid chlorine, and don’t drink from plastics.
Choose cleaner food: Eat organic, get your food from local sources, and avoid ultra-processed products.

Cleaning up your external environment helps your body finally shift energy from detoxification to healing.

What About the Toxins Already Inside Me?
Here, Martin offers hope. Certain supplements and superfoods, such as zeolite, can bind and help eliminate heavy metals and other toxic residues. He also talks about nanosoma (a polycosanol product) and quercetin for cellular repair. But he’s quick to note: “It’s not just like you take Zeolite for three weeks and you’re done. [Toxic exposure is] continuous. I still take it every day.”

The Invisible Battles: Trauma, Stagnation, and Social Programming
The conversation takes a sobering turn toward the emotional side of chronic disease. Many people with fibromyalgia were dismissed, misunderstood, or told their pain "was all in their head." As Scott shares, this societal dismissal adds trauma, making healing even harder.

“First,” Martin counsels, “get rid of the bad stuff. Then, replenish what’s missing.” Only then do movement, social support, and emotional healing (like addressing childhood trauma) have space to work.

Society doesn’t make it easy—there’s immense pressure to fit in, to eat what’s cheap and quick, and to trust that someone else’s magic solution will work for you. But health isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s built slowly, in environment after environment, day after day.

Takeaway:
If you’re living with persistent pain, the mainstream “quick fix” probably won’t work. But you can start healing by making your world less toxic, nourishing your gut, and giving both your body and mind the support they need. You can’t do it overnight—but, fortunately, you’re not alone on the journey.
