Sermon on unity of covenants - Lords day July 13th, 2025 - Trinity Reformed Church
Covenants made with man instituted by God. How do the Abrahamic, the mosaic and the new covenant unite? Is there continuity or discontinuity? What is the same and what is different. We have to admit there is an element of freshness and newness in the covenants. Does the next covenant replace the former? Or does the next build on the former? Confirming without closing? Furthering? Not displacing. Are they supplementing without supplanting. Scripture teaches a uniting of the covenants.

When God set apart a people for Himself He made a covenant Gen 12, 15, 17. Abraham’s descendants lived under those covenants. We don't see a closure but a further stage of development in those covenants. Exodus 2:24

Genesis 17:5-7 (NKJV) 5 “No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 “I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7 “And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you. Exodus 6 is connected. 2 Sam 7:6 Davidic covenant. 7:23

There is something new being revealed but there is continuity. The Abrahamic is central to the mosaic. Moses asks for mercy after they made the golden calf. The Lord relented on the basis of the Abrahamic covenant. Joshua goes to posses the land. Gen 15:18, Exodus 23:31, Joshua 1:3. Gen 15:7,13. Deut 12, 1 Chronicles 16:15-18 - believe in Him and you will inherit the promises. Gal 3:26

1 Chronicles 16:15-18 (NKJV) 15 Remember His covenant forever, The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations, 16 [The covenant which] He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac, 17 And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel [for] an everlasting covenant, 18 Saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan As the allotment of your inheritance,”

Deuteronomy 12:10 (NKJV) “But [when] you cross over the Jordan and dwell in the land which the LORD your God is giving you to inherit, and He gives you rest from all your enemies round about, so that you dwell in safety,

2 Samuel 7:23 (NKJV) “And who [is] like Your people, like Israel, the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for Himself a name--and to do for Yourself great and awesome deeds for Your land--before Your people whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, the nations, and their gods?

Exodus 2:24 (NKJV) So God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

Exodus 6:4-5 (NKJV) 4 “I have also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, in which they were strangers. 5 “And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel whom the Egyptians keep in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant.
