Retro 80's TV Time Capsule Night | Used Cars Extended Mix | Max Headroom Episodes "Academy" & "Deities"

Special “Used Cars” (1980) Edition…if you are a fan of the movie, you’ll view it through a whole new lens after tonight…you might be interested to know that John “Walter Sobchak” Milius was a co-writer of this very bizarre comedy from 1980. It was released on July 11, 1980. I saw it in Fontana, California at a drive-in theater in double-feature w/Stir Crazy. I had no clue how much ‘extra’ was added to Used Cars…how could I? I was barely old enough to see the screen from the backseat. Tonight though…yeah…it’ll blow your mind the jokes that were ‘hidden’ in Used Cars.

Tonight we aren't going to get too heavy. This is mostly about taking a break from the madness w/a bit of classic TV from the late 80s. Take a trip back with me to 1987 when Max Headroom was beginning to air on one of the three major networks...yep...3 channels we had to choose from without the 'miracle of Cable TV'...not only did you have to be 'lucky enough' to live in the Suburbs to get MTV...you'd still have to call your local cable company & demand "I WANT MY MTV!"

Honestly, MTV didn't suck back then. It was pretty great actually. Get this...when you tuned in, they made the bold programming decision to play music videos 24 hours a day...or at least something resembling 'music'...mixed with 'video'...instead of The Real World Survivor Amazing Race marathons....before they destroyed modern television with Reality TV, they actually played music videos & I will tonight as well...and I'll throw in some SNL skits, classic commercials (long distance rates were a bitch back then)...and other interesting things from the 80s that might surprise the kids to learn.

There was no smartphones...computers used huge floppy disks & played mostly text only games like Oregon Trail or you might be lucky enough to know someone with a Macintosh who can play Summer Games or something graphical...but modems & the like...were mostly something we saw Matthew Broderick use in WarGames & Ferris Bueller but didn't have access to ourselves. To make matters worse...I lived on a farm in 1987...way the hell away from modern conveniences...which meant we got our entertainment by VHS tapes

Cannon Pictures...Chuck Norris, Charles Bronson, Michael Dudikoff...that's right, we waited for the corner store to deliver us classic B-films chock full of violence, explosions and badass dudes exacting revenge on their enemies or cleaning up the neighborhood....the Bandit was on the run from Smokey....we still gave a damn about Frank Sinatra & the Rat Pack even though it wasn't our generation...we sorta knew they were Hollywood royalty...

You can imagine what it was like to see something like Max Headroom in 1987...I remain impressed by this amazing television series to this day. It's incredibly prophetic, not to mention well-produced. The acting is top notch. Every episode was cinema quality across the board. I was definitely a fan. But I had no idea that these were more than plotlines...

Continuing the series with Season Two Episodes One & Two

“Academy”
While Blank Reg publicly fights for his freedom and his life for a crime he didn't commit, Theora recruits Bryce to help track down the real culprits. But does Bryce know more about the advanced tech crime than he's willing to admit?

“Deities”
An old flame of Edison's who has become the leader of a controversial new age church desperately wants Max's technology to help the church fulfill its shallow promises of a computer-enhanced afterlife.
