Relics of ancient civilizations, including more than 10,000 pre-Columbian earthworks and perhaps as many as 24,000 others, can be found beneath the thick vegetation of the uncharted Amazon jungle. These features, which include ditches, walkways, and wells and occasionally create geometric patterns, were formed by indigenous peoples between 500 and 1,500 years ago. A more populous and altered terrain than previously believed is suggested by the evidence of vanished cities that researchers are finding, including towns, pyramids, clay structures, and artificial terraces.
