The Call to Follow the Straight Path
Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 100rd episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,The Call to Follow the Straight Path.
The call to follow the Straight Path As-Sirat al-Mustaqim—is one of the most fundamental and recurring themes in Islam. It represents the path of obedience to Allah, adherence to His guidance, and walking in the footsteps of the prophets. Every Muslim, multiple times a day, sincerely asks Allah to guide them to this path when reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, the opening chapter of the Qur'an Surah Al-Fatihah verse 6–7 “Guide us to the Straight Path, the path of those You have blessed, not of those who earned Your anger or went astray” . This supplication forms the heart of Islamic life, indicating that staying on the straight path is both a spiritual aspiration and a divine command.
The Straight Path, as defined by the Qur'an and the Sunnah, is the path of monotheism, righteousness, justice, and mercy. It involves accepting Allah as the sole object of worship and obeying His messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was sent to guide humanity. Allah commands in the Qur’an Surah Al-An’am verse 153 “And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous” . This verse is clear in its directive—there is only one true path to Allah, and all other paths are distractions or deviations that lead away from salvation.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized this point through both his teachings and example. In an authentic hadith, he once drew a straight line in the sand and then drew lines branching off from it. He said, *“This is the straight path of Allah.”* Then he pointed to the other lines and said, *“At the head of each of these paths is a devil calling to it.”* He then recited the same verse from Surah Al-An’am (Hadith reported by Ahmad and authenticated by Al-Albani). This powerful illustration shows that the path to truth is singular and divinely protected, while the paths of misguidance are many, deceptive, and dangerous.
The Straight Path is not merely a set of rituals or outer actions; it encompasses the entire way of life as defined by the Qur’an and Sunnah. It includes sincerity in worship, ethical conduct, fairness in dealings, humility, and trust in Allah. Following this path demands a deep commitment to learning, self-purification, and patience. The Qur’an assures those who sincerely strive for it in Surah Al-‘Ankabut verse 69 “And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good”* . This verse affirms that Allah assists and blesses the efforts of those who seek the Straight Path with sincerity.
Moreover, the Straight Path is the path of moderation, avoiding both extremes of negligence and fanaticism. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was described in the Qur’an as in Surah Ash-Shura verse 52 “a guide to the Straight Path”, and his life serves as the perfect model of balance in worship, behavior, and dealings with others. He warned against both excessiveness in religion and complete disregard of divine law. In a hadith reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim, he said, *“Beware of exaggeration in religion, for those before you were destroyed due to exaggeration in religion.”* Thus, staying on the Straight Path also means avoiding extremes and staying aligned with the balanced, authentic teachings of Islam.
Deviation from this path brings serious consequences both in this world and the Hereafter. Allah warns in Surah Ta-Ha, verse 124 “Whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind” . This verse highlights the spiritual, psychological, and eternal damage caused by straying from divine guidance. In contrast, those who follow the Straight Path are promised success and salvation. Allah says in Surah Fussilat verse 30 “Indeed, those who have said, ‘Our Lord is Allah’ and then remained steadfast – the angels will descend upon them [saying], ‘Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised’”.
The path is also not static—it requires constant vigilance, repentance, and renewal of intention. The Prophet (peace be upon him) frequently made the du‘a, Reported in Sunan al-Tirmidhi No 2140 “O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion” . This supplication reflects the understanding that the Straight Path is not simply about starting with guidance, but persevering upon it until death.
In conclusion, the call to follow the Straight Path is a comprehensive invitation to live a life of purpose, sincerity, and obedience to Allah. It is the path of the prophets, the righteous, and those beloved to Allah. The Qur’an and Hadith provide clear markers for this path, and it is through consistent effort, sincere worship, and reliance on Allah that a believer can remain on it. Every Muslim is reminded of this path in their daily prayers, demonstrating that guidance is not a one-time event but an ongoing need. True success, both in this world and the Hereafter, lies in responding to this divine call and remaining steadfast upon the Straight Path.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
Allah Hafiz
