The story of Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) is one of the most profound and revered narratives in the Qur’an. He is considered one of the greatest messengers of Allah and is mentioned with deep respect and honor throughout the Islamic scripture. His miraculous birth, divine mission, teachings, ascension, and his role in the end times form a unique and essential part of Islamic theology. The Qur’an emphasizes Isa’s humanity, his servitude to Allah, and his role as a prophet sent to guide the Children of Israel. His story serves as a powerful reminder of Allah’s power, mercy, and the importance of faith and obedience.

The story of Prophet Isa begins with his miraculous birth. Allah chose Maryam (Mary), a devout and pure woman from the family of Imran, to bear a child without a father. Her devotion is highlighted in Surah Al-Imran and Surah Maryam, where she is described as a woman chosen above all women. When the angel Jibril (Gabriel) appeared to her with the news of a son, she was astonished and said, “How can I have a son when no man has touched me?” The angel replied, surah Maryam verse 20-21 “So it will be; your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me. And We will make him a sign for the people and a mercy from Us’”. Thus, Isa was born by the command of Allah, without a father, a miracle similar to the creation of Adam, who was created without a father or mother. Surah Al Imran verse 59 “Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust; then He said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was”.

Isa spoke as an infant to defend his mother against the accusations of her people. He declared, Surah Maryam verse 30-31 “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am…” . This miraculous speech was not only a sign of his prophethood but also a protection for Maryam from the false accusations against her chastity. Allah elevated her status and exonerated her through the words of her son.

As a prophet, Isa was sent to the Children of Israel to confirm the message of previous prophets and to call them back to the worship of the One true God. His mission was one of peace, mercy, and reform. He came with the Injil (Gospel), a divine scripture revealed to him. Isa performed many miracles by the permission of Allah: healing the blind and the leper, bringing the dead back to life, and creating a bird from clay and breathing life into it. Allah says in the Qur’an: Surah Al Imran verse 49 “And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], ‘Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord… I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead—by permission of Allah’”.

Despite his miracles and his call to righteousness, many among the Israelites rejected Isa and plotted to kill him. However, Allah protected him. Contrary to Christian belief, Islam teaches that Isa was neither crucified nor killed. Instead, Allah raised him up in a miraculous way. Surah An Nisa verse 157-158 “And [for] their saying, ‘Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.’ And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them... Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise”. This verse makes clear the Islamic stance: Isa was not crucified but was taken up by Allah, and he remains alive until a time appointed by Allah.

One of the most important aspects of Isa’s story in Islam is his future return. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) foretold that Isa will return before the Day of Judgment to restore justice and to defeat the false messiah (Al-Masih ad-Dajjal). In a famous hadith recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet said, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, surely the son of Maryam will soon descend among you. He will break the cross, kill the pigs, and abolish the Jizya (tax), and wealth will be so abundant that no one will accept it” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 3448). This signifies that Isa will reaffirm monotheism, eliminate false beliefs attributed to him, and bring about a time of peace and justice.

Islam firmly rejects the notion of Isa being the son of God or divine in any form. He is described in the Qur’an as a prophet, a servant of Allah, and His word sent to Maryam. Surah Al Maidah verse 75“The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food”. This verse emphasizes their humanity and refutes any notion of divinity
