The Story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Pharaoh
Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 96th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,The Story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Pharaoh.
The story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Pharaoh is one of the most significant narratives in the Qur’an, spanning multiple chapters and highlighting themes of justice, tyranny, divine power, and the consequences of arrogance. Musa, a prophet sent by Allah, is one of the most mentioned figures in the Qur’an, and his story serves as a timeless lesson for humanity. It is a story not just of confrontation between two powerful figures but also of faith, perseverance, and the ultimate triumph of righteousness over oppression.
The narrative begins with the birth of Prophet Musa during a time when Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, had decreed the killing of every newborn male from the children of Israel. Pharaoh, in his arrogance, feared the rise of a child among the Israelites who might challenge his authority and the dominance of his rule. To protect her son, Musa’s mother placed him in a basket and set him afloat on the river Nile, trusting in Allah’s plan. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, guided the basket to the palace of Pharaoh, where it was found by Pharaoh's wife, Asiya. Despite her husband's tyrannical nature, Asiya’s heart was moved by the child, and she persuaded Pharaoh to adopt him, saying, in surah Al Qasas verse 9 “Perhaps he will bring us joy, or we may adopt him as a son”. Thus, Musa was raised in the very palace of the ruler who would later be his adversary.
As Musa grew up, he came to understand his true heritage as a member of the oppressed Israelites. One day, while walking in the city, Musa saw an Egyptian beating an Israelite. In defense of the Israelite, Musa struck the Egyptian, causing his death. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Musa fled Egypt to escape Pharaoh’s wrath and took refuge in the land of Midian. It was there that Allah called him to prophethood through a burning bush, revealing to him His divine mission to free the Israelites from the bondage of Pharaoh.
In Midian, Allah commanded Musa to return to Egypt and confront Pharaoh, declaring him to be the oppressor of the Israelites. Musa, though initially hesitant, was assured by Allah’s guidance and sent his brother Harun (Aaron) to assist him. Together, they approached Pharaoh, who had established himself as a god in the eyes of the people, and demanded that he release the children of Israel. When Pharaoh arrogantly rejected their call and ridiculed Musa, saying, surah Ash Shuara verse 23 “And who is the Lord of the worlds?”, Musa responded by asserting the sovereignty of Allah, who had created him and everything in existence. Despite the clear signs and miracles shown by Musa — including his staff turning into a serpent and his hand becoming radiant — Pharaoh remained obstinate and refused to accept the truth.
Pharaoh, threatened by Musa’s message and the potential of his influence, sought to maintain his authority by trying to discredit him. He summoned his magicians to perform tricks that would challenge the miracles of Musa. When the magicians threw their ropes and staffs, they appeared to transform into serpents, but when Musa threw down his staff, it swallowed up all of their tricks. This miracle left the magicians in awe, and many of them, seeing the truth of Musa’s message, accepted Islam and declared their faith in the one true God, Allah. Pharaoh, however, remained defiant, even ordering the execution of the magicians who had converted.
The Qur'an recounts the repeated signs and plagues that befell the people of Egypt as a consequence of Pharaoh’s refusal to repent. Allah sent various afflictions, including floods, locusts, lice, and darkness, as a warning to Pharaoh and his people. Each time a calamity struck, Pharaoh promised to release the Israelites, but once the calamity was lifted, he reneged on his promise. Allah, in His mercy, gave Pharaoh ample opportunity to repent, but his heart remained hardened, and he continued in his tyranny. The Qur'an describes Pharaoh's stubbornness, saying, surah Ghafir verse 36 "And they [the Pharaoh’s people] followed the command of every arrogant tyrant".
Finally, after years of struggle, Allah commanded Musa to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and part the Red Sea for them to escape. As Musa and his followers fled, Pharaoh and his army pursued them, but when they reached the Red Sea, Allah commanded the sea to part, allowing the Israelites to cross safely. However, when Pharaoh and his army attempted to follow, the waters returned, drowning Pharaoh and his forces. The Qur’an describes this final moment of Pharaoh’s destruction: surah Al Qasas verse 40 “So We drowned him and those with him, all together”.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
