On March 13, 2010, Manny Pacquiao faced Joshua Clottey in a highly anticipated welterweight showdown dubbed “The Event,” held at the newly opened Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. With a crowd of over 50,000 in attendance and hundreds of thousands watching via pay-per-view, this bout marked a milestone not just in Pacquiao’s career but in boxing history—being the first major fight in the iconic NFL venue. The stakes were high, as Pacquiao was defending his WBO welterweight title and solidifying his place as the pound-for-pound king.

Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao entered the ring with an impressive record of 50 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws, including 38 knockouts. Known for his relentless speed, volume punching, and southpaw style, Pacquiao had already captured world titles in seven different weight divisions by then (he’d later go on to make it eight). His opponent, Joshua "Grand Master" Clottey, was a tough, durable fighter from Ghana with a reputation for tight defense and a granite chin. He had previously held the IBF welterweight title and came into the match with a record of roughly 35–3.

The fight itself was one-sided. Pacquiao overwhelmed Clottey with sheer activity, throwing a career-high 1,231 punches over 12 rounds, landing 246 of them. Clottey, in contrast, only threw 399 punches and landed 108. While he showed flashes of sharp counters, he remained largely in a defensive shell, which frustrated many fans and analysts alike. The final scorecards were not close: 120–108, 119–109, and 119–109—all in favor of Pacquiao, who retained his WBO title.

Clottey's defensive strategy drew heavy criticism after the fight. Despite having moments of success, he was largely passive and hesitant to engage. Some boxing fans speculated about behind-the-scenes issues, and Clottey later expressed frustration with his management and earnings, even implying in interviews that he didn’t feel motivated to win. Others accused him of failing to take advantage of the opportunity to rise to greatness.

Originally, this date was intended for the long-awaited Pacquiao vs. Mayweather megafight. However, negotiations fell apart due to disagreements over drug testing protocols. As a result, Clottey was chosen as the replacement opponent. While "The Event" still drew significant attention, many believed it lacked the drama and fireworks expected from a marquee PPV headliner.

Despite that, the fight was a major commercial success. It generated around 700,000 pay-per-view buys and over $35 million in revenue. Pacquiao’s performance reaffirmed his elite status and further boosted his global superstardom. Clottey, while tough and capable, missed the chance to make his mark in boxing history.

In hindsight, this fight represents both a peak and a pause in boxing momentum. It showcased Pacquiao at his athletic best, throwing with incredible pace and variety, and put a spotlight on how defensive tactics can sometimes clash with fan expectations. The fight served as a prelude to bigger, more dramatic showdowns in the years ahead, and it remains a key chapter in both fighters’ legacies.
