Nehemiah Lesson-09: Moving Forward with God (Part I)

This Week’s Lesson

We are in Lesson-09 in the series “Rebuilding the Covenant Community” from the book of Nehemiah.
 
This is Volume II of our series: “After the Exile” a study of Ezra-Nehemiah-Esther.
 
The lesson is titled “Moving Forward with God – Part I” and our focus passage is Nehemiah 9:1-31.
 
Please find your way in your Bible to that passage.

In our previous episode, we concluded our teaching of Nehemiah 7-8, a study we called “Sanctified in the Truth”.
 
In these chapters we saw Nehemiah taking the next steps in the process of rebuilding the Covenant Community.
 
As the walls and gates and the city of Jerusalem itself needed rebuilding, so too the people needed to be rebuilt spiritually.
 
We also learned that God put it in Nehemiah’s heart to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the other people and register them officially.
 
Then we saw an old friend return to the stage. He is our priest and scribe, Ezra the man who had devoted his life to the study, teaching, and application of the Torah (Ezra 7:10).
 
The people need to be sanctified in the truth of God’s Word and there was no one better suited to lead in this task.
 
We learned that this sanctification process was enabled by the preaching of the word, the teaching of the word, and the application of the word.
 
We should remember that when the Word of God is exalted, 
His people are sanctified, encouraged, and equipped for good works.

In today’s lesson we begin our look at Nehemiah 9-10. In these two chapters we will see the Covenant Community taking the necessary steps to move forward in their relationship with Yahweh.
 
We will see the Jewish Exiles collectively entering into a time of fasting, sorrow, repentance, prayer, worship, and recommitment.
