The Old Abandoned Church of Dunlewey

The Old Church of Dunlewey in County Donegal, much like the Taj Mahal, stands as a timeless tribute to a profound love story. Centuries after the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj Mahal in 1632, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, to enshrine the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, a woman in County Donegal created her own monument to love, devotion, and loss.

Jane Smith Russell built the church as a memorial to her husband, James Russell, the landlord of the Dunlewey Estate, who passed away on September 2, 1848. His body was laid to rest in a vault beneath the church floor.

Consecrated on September 1, 1853, the church served as a Chapel of Ease for the Tullaghabegley parish, which encompassed the modern-day Gweedore and Cloughaneely parishes.
