It is a while since I last reviewed a shower speaker, and they do seem to have moved on a bit. Although this one, the S5 from Hupoaf , is the same form factor as the others, it does offer a few new features.

In the surprisingly upmarket box, I received the shower speaker, charging cable, suction mount and user guide. Build quality seems fine, the speaker seems tough, heavy duty and capable of withstanding the inevitable falls when the suction mount fails (as they all do).

On the front of the speaker in the centre, there is a small LED clock encircled by a ring of multicoloured LEDs. Around the edge are embossed buttons for Power/Play/Pause/Call, Next/Vol Up, Previous/Vol Down, Light On/Off/Mode. The buttons are quite large but with black on black text, which is almost impossible to read. On top of the clock is a hanging hook, and on the back, the gromett protected USB-C charging port, and the mount for the sucker or screw mount.

The speaker features a built in rechargeable battery. We are not told the capacity, but a two hour charge will give up to ten hours of use, depending on the settings used. It is charged using the USB-C port and has a charging status LED.

It features an up to date (almost) Bluetooth 5,3 link to your phone and after initial manual setup (link to "S5") it will pair automatically with a stable drop out free connection. One handy feature not mentioned in the user guide is that it syncs the time automatically to your phone, so no time consuming clock setup is needed. If no Bluetooth connection is made the device will power off after about five minutes.

One selling point of the speaker is the LED display, which features a coloured ring encircling the clock. Long press the Light button to turn on and short press to scroll through the 5 colours, select breathing colours and turn the lights off. The is an attractive enough features and comes on by default.

Sound quality, well, I have to say that is excellent for the size. Powerful and loud with plenty of punch bass, and far better than I was expecting.

This is described as a shower speaker, and it works well enough in that regard, but this IPX7 waterproof, robust and heavy duty speaker would be equally well suited for outdoor or camping use and as a phone speaker since it has a microphone and call control options.

Currently priced on Amazon at £26.99, there are cheaper rivals available, but this one sounds good, looks good and seems robust enough to handle most situations, and so is probably not a bad buy.
