On July 10, 2025, around 1:45 a.m., two Los Angeles Police Department officers from the Mission Station stopped for coffee at the Western Bagel shop at 7814 Sepulveda Blvd. in Van Nuys. While walking toward the shop, they were nearly hit by a Nissan Frontier pickup truck driven erratically by an 18-year-old. A tow truck driver, honking to intervene, was pursuing the truck. The driver accelerated, lost control, made an abrupt turn, and veered toward the officers. Security footage showed the truck grazing one officer, who fell, while the other leaped to safety. The vehicle then crashed into the bagel shop, causing significant damage, including a broken water main and possible gas line rupture. Firefighters shut off utilities, forcing a temporary closure. The grazed officer sustained minor injuries and did not need hospitalization. No other injuries were reported. Four teens were in the truck: the driver and three passengers, including two girls aged 16-17. The driver was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and taken to the Mission Station. The girls were cited for curfew violations and released to their parents; the third passenger was released at the scene.
