The Acts of the Apostles is the fifth book of the New Testament, serving as a continuation of the Gospel of Luke. Traditionally attributed to Luke, a physician and companion of the Apostle Paul, it provides a historical account of the early Christian Church, tracing its growth from Jesus’ ascension to the missionary journeys of Paul. Written around AD 60–80, Acts is addressed to Theophilus, the same recipient as the Gospel of Luke, and highlights the spread of the gospel from Jerusalem to Rome, showing how the Holy Spirit empowered the apostles to carry out Jesus’ mission.
The book begins with Jesus’ final instructions to His disciples before His ascension into heaven, promising them that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Shortly after, on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends upon the disciples in Jerusalem, filling them with boldness and enabling them to speak in different languages, a sign of the gospel’s universal reach. Peter delivers a powerful sermon, leading to the conversion of 3,000 people, marking the birth of the early Christian Church.
Acts details the rapid growth of the Church, emphasizing community, prayer, miracles, and persecution. The apostles perform healings, exorcisms, and other signs, demonstrating that Jesus' power continues through them. However, they also face opposition from Jewish religious leaders, leading to imprisonment, threats, and even martyrdom, as seen in the stoning of Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Despite persecution, the gospel spreads beyond Jerusalem, reaching Samaria and the Gentiles, fulfilling Jesus’ command to take the message to the ends of the earth.
One of the key moments in Acts is the conversion of Saul (Paul), a former persecutor of Christians, who encounters Jesus on the road to Damascus and becomes one of the most important figures in spreading the gospel. His transformation marks a turning point in the book, as he begins missionary journeys across the Roman world, establishing churches in Asia Minor, Greece, and eventually Rome. His ministry includes preaching, performing miracles, and writing letters that form much of the New Testament.
Acts also highlights the inclusion of Gentiles in the Church, particularly through Peter’s vision of a sheet with unclean animals and the conversion of Cornelius, a Roman centurion, demonstrating that salvation is for all people, not just Jews. The Jerusalem Council, led by James and the apostles, later confirms that Gentiles do not need to follow Jewish law to become followers of Christ, solidifying the universal nature of Christianity.
