The Book of Jeremiah is a major prophetic text located within the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and the Christian Old Testament. Named after the prophet Jeremiah, who lived and prophesied in Judah during the turbulent final decades of the 7th and the early 6th century BCE, this book provides a detailed account of Jeremiah’s prophecies, ministry, personal struggles, and historical events surrounding the fall of Jerusalem to Babylon in 586 BCE.

Jeremiah, often called the "weeping prophet," ministered during a critical historical period marked by intense political upheaval, social injustice, and spiritual decline. His prophetic career began during the reign of King Josiah (around 627 BCE) and continued through the reigns of Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah, culminating in Judah’s defeat, the destruction of the Temple, and the subsequent Babylonian exile. His life and messages are profoundly shaped by the looming threat of Babylonian dominance in the region, reflecting both national tragedy and personal anguish.

Thematically, the Book of Jeremiah confronts issues such as idolatry, social injustice, false prophets, and the people's persistent disregard for their covenant relationship with God.
